St Nicholas Parent Support Group

The parent support group was started in 2003.  As a school we recognise the joys and
heartaches parents and carers experience whilst bringing up a child with special needs.

On average we meet once a month and speakers from outside the school community and teachers from our school talk about a wide range of issues that may affect our families.  The advice and good practices shared by the practitioners (and tried and trusted methods from parents) give us extra tools to deal with situations at home.

The meetings are informal and informative.  We value the comments, advice and support that parents are able to offer one another.

Managers from the school have also shared advice on different tools we use to help the
children such as the special handwriting scheme we use and the Phonics scheme that is in place.

We have also had sessions on Makaton signing, teaching Maths at home, Speech and Language development and Occupational Therapy.

So, as you can see the support offered by Parent Support Group is extremely varied.

It is also very well attended and as co-ordinator I would like to thank all the speakers involved and in particular the involvement and commitment of the parents.
